Escapement

It’s raining and cold in New York so...a quiet blue post.

Type and copy may tweak a bit but this is basically the cover for the sequel to Jay Lake’s Mainspring.

Art by Stephan Martiniere.

[Lots of kudos for Stephan on Jay's LJ.]

I loved Main Spring, both the book and the cover. This is great news. When's it out ? - Jeff the enthused.

Hi Jeff,

I'm sorry to say it wont be out until next summer. I sometimes debate whether it makes sense to post these covers so early but, well, it is the art department and we tend to be working on covers about a year before pub date. By the time I see books published they almost feel like ancient history to me.

Wow, that is beautiful. I am totally in love.

My only comment (based on my experiences with the Mainspring cover) is that I wish it had some bright element somewhere in the picture to catch the eye from a bit of a distance. The covers are absolutely stunning in the hand, but from tabletop display or bookshelf, the eye isn't drawn so much.

I don't mind the wait - I know it's going to be great.

I don't know Jay - it sure drew me in. It was lovely, not gaudy...

Very nice, Irene. Is this a digital piece?

It is digital, David. I’ve often thought that Stephan is one of the most exciting digital artists out there – using the medium for what it’s best at and not trying to mimic oil paints with it.

Awesome! I need to get to reading my copy of Mindspring soon! I've been looking at getting some Martinierre prints for my office. With my love of dirigibles, I think the two Lake covers would look great side by side!
